The Gilded Life

I recently watched a documentary about Pedophilia in the movie industry. It is really a disgusting and disturbing thing in general, but this industry amplifies how bad it can really be. The movie is called “An Open Secret” and it’s a long, painful watch if you find it hard to grapple with the subject matter. It’s currently on youtube, and I believe that’s the only place you can find it.

I won’t say everything that I can about this movie, but I think everyone who enjoys film, not just documentaries, should give this a watch. This movie throws around incredibly recognizable names that will stun you. Personally, I have stopped seeing (or at least paying) movies that would make these men any money at all. The amount of people involved in this black market industry is really mind-numbing. What makes it worse is how blatant it all is, and how the overwhelming evidence doesn’t matter because of who these executives are. Money is the only reason that all of these men aren’t behind bars.

This film alone contains many testimonials from victims of these Hollywood pedophile big-shots. There are hundreds of others that are too ashamed to go in front of a camera but would go in front of a courtroom. Scare tactics and money are the things holding them back.

This film is mainly comprised of interviews, pictures with narration voiceovers, and some home footage. It scored a 93% on rotten tomatoes, but is relatively unheard of. Awareness on this topic needs to be heightened, and a perfect way to do it is to watch this movie and share it with someone else. I don’t expect anyone to go out and start raising money for a courtroom battle, but I think watching the movie and not paying for any films made by these directors and producers will be enough.

This sounds pretty interesting. There have been a couple of very famous cases of male directors who have taken advantage of younger actresses, but I hadn’t realized this issue was “an open secret.” What would be interesting to see is who funded this documentary and what their goals are. Is it to bring about changes? To indict specific people? To simply bring awareness? I also imagine (hope) that this issue is less prevalent now than it probably was in the early days of Hollywood, but perhaps not. Sounds like an important film because – yes as you say, we can choose not to support these filmmakers by avoiding their films.

It’s so sad how prevalent pedophilia and sec abuse is in this country but punishment for such depraved acts haven’t caught up with the technological age we currently all live in. Without even watching this documentary yet, a few prominent names in film and media have come to mind. I truly feel sorry for victims of these industries and people in power who abuse their power to take advantage of kids, women, and men alike. The justice system is too old and focused on petty crimes that hardly any punishment is given to these criminals. What’s worse is how hard it is too bring rape or sexual abuse charges especially with the statute of limitations which blocks a great deal of cases from even being heard in the first place, thus silencing victims after they finally build the courage to speak up. In the cases where it does make it to trial and the perpertrator(s) are found guilty the sentences usually don’t match the crime.

What’s actually crazy about this is that just recently, (and I can’t remember where I saw something about this), But since the recent Weinstein thing happened and everyone is coming out about his sexual harassment the lid on the whole movie industry has been blown. The amount of questionable sexual actions in it is crazy. Practically Cory Feldman who was a child actor tried to speak about this for years because when he was a child he was a victim of rape from higher ups and no one cared to do anything about it. Practically people just look the other way. He spoke about it on talk shows made documentaries, and did everything he could to speak about this and no one ever listened. It’s not unheard off and it’s obvious that only until recently did our society honestly take sexual harassment seriously and actually become proactive against it. So, although pedophilia in the movie industry is horrendous it’s almost like a well-known fact among the people in it, and it may be even bigger than just the movie industry or among child actors. Who knows how far spread this insider secret is, who else may know, how far they go, and how corrupt it all is. Protesting against these known offenders is sadly the biggest impact we can make, petitions and all those things help but we can’t see these people off to court and properly punished all the time, the system is corrupt and a lot of people tend to walk away from charges especially concerning sexual abuse. Thanks to sites like You Tube, we have the chance place these problems within the public eye and give it widespread recognition. Social media has the power to prevent these crimes going unpunished, it empowers all of us to do something about it so maybe we can make a change with all this because now thanks to this documentary we all know what’s really going on within the movie industry.
